NAT’S NATION: FIGHT AGAINST MS

THE FINISH LINE #walkMS Houston

THE FINISH LINE #walkMS Houston

Five years ago, my little sister called me on HER birthday while I was at work and informed me that she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The news came following loss of vision in one of her eyes.   As with anything in our life…I was the one that cried like a newborn baby.  I was angry, afraid and confused.  She on the other hand was at peace…answers to lingering questions were now resolved.

A marriage to a stand-up husband, two children, amazing treatment, a little silence  (she vowed she wouldn’t really tell me about the tough days because I am such a wus when it comes to her) and a whole lot of prayer later… both she and the family is adjusting.  She is our shero!  Probably the most faithful and dynamic representation of strength I know.

Time has also afforded us an opportunity to learn more, navigate the myths and understand that due to advances in medical treatment, MS is not a death sentence.  As such, our circle of family and friends are committed to not only FIGHTING BY FAITH against MS but doing our part to support research, advocacy, and awareness.

This morning, we participated in the #WALKMS Houston 5K event.  In partnership with my non-profit organization Keey 4 Kommunities, inc. we embraced the challenge of not only walking but raising funds to find a cure.  Eleven individuals made up the NAT’S NATION team and we walked alongside other HERO’S, SHERO’S, family members and friends who are impacted by this vicious disease.   We had a blast!!

Today, we were reminded that MS has no specific FACE and is not limited to race, age, sex or ethnicity.  The attack is senseless and is not prejudice when it comes to who it attacks.  TODAY, we all fought back and NAT’S NATION donated over $1000 toward the over $130,000 raised through HOUSTON WALK MS  to eliminate the burden of Multiple Sclerosis.  We had a goal of $5000…so feel free to support with a donation of any amount by clicking here.

Last minute mommy duties prevented Natalie and her family from driving down for the walk… but I know we represented her well.  We carried her FAITH through the campus of University of Houston (both our alma mater) .  We held closely the stories of hope that was shared… one, by a grandmother who was told in ‘1991 that she would never walk again…yet; over a decade later, was walking through the trails of UH without missing a beat.

We admired the likes of EX NFL superstar Golden Richards whose five year battle carries more hype than his game clinching SUPERBOWL touchdown against the Denver Broncos in 1975.  I hugged and high-fived my high school classmate who was diagnosed in May (whose little sister is Natalie’s classmate).

Our Keey 4 Kommunities, inc. Board Member (shown bottom right with pink) joined Nat’s Nation and also walked in honor of her mother Mrs. Cora who is also surviving her battle with MS.

Research is so important for people like Mrs. Cora because the world needs more of her German Chocolate Cakes and baking treats (MS makes it tough for her sometimes).

We smiled through an engagement proposal and cheered as we earned our medals…ALL BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT BY FAITH NATALIE  and SO MANY OTHERS WILL WIN!WE DID IT...NAT'S NATION

Did I say…the day was amazing!  I personally felt purposed and responsible.  I felt unified and inspired.

So, thank you to the entire NAT’S NATION family…those that attended, those that donated and those who continue to support through prayer, words of encouragement and thoughts.  Thank you to ALL the NAT’S NATION donors (click to meet them).  WE APPRECIATE YOU!!

Check out a few more photos from our morning…
